We worked with the Porter News Media/TV Class to write their own news stories of an upcoming event at the school. Please enjoy reading their creative news stories!

Porter Concert Kids will be playing instruments in the Auditorium. It will be on February 21-2011. My grandma will be coming and my mom and dad will be coming. I will be watching my friends at the play names Michelle, and Destiny. Michelle will be playing the viola. Finally, Destiny will be playing violins. Last but not lease Mr. Rogers will be constructing them.

Did you know there’s going to be a concert February fourth, 2011? There will be lots of people. Teachers, students, and guests. The constructer is Mr. Crouse. Lots of instruments will be playing some are violins, trumpets, tubas, flutes and drums. Some guests will be students, parents, grand parents, friends, and teachers. There’s students playing instruments and singing. There’s special outfits and clothing. Some songs their going to play are Winter Time, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Dr. Weeks Elementry

We worked with the students in the Dr. Weeks break dancing class to create a collaborative story. Every student added to the story and plot development. By the end of the first day, we had this written. Each student then came up with their own ending. Please enjoy the adventures of Eric Carl and Arrowhead as they try to save Scooby-Doo from the magical playground!

Scooby-Doo woke up one day and decided to set out to find the best playground ever! He got dressed, had breakfast, and head out on his adventure for the day. He starts walking, not knowing how long it is going to take him to find the most wonderful playground ever. Sure enough he did not have to go far because right around the corner was a huge playground. Scooby-Doo was so excited he could not keep himself from walking, and ended up running full speed to the playground! When he got there it was better than he imagined! There were TVs, swings, video games, money bars, bridges connecting all the parts of the playground, and slides. As Scooby got closer to the playground he realized the swings were whispering to each other, which is not normal for swings, so Scooby went up close to the swings to investigate. As he got closer the swings said hello. There was no doubt in Scooby’s mind that this was the best playground ever! As he explores more, he talks to the slides, compliments the wood chips, and greets the bridges. Scooby is climbing around on the monkey bard, and up onto the bridge when suddenly he is trapped! He cries for help. Who better to have save him than Eric Carl, Arrowhead, and his magical flying bison?

A few towns over Arrowhead sees on his computer screen that someone is in grave danger at the Dr. Weeks playground. This means only one thing—he must get Eric Carl and his flying bison to save this person! Unfortunately for Arrowhead, Eric Carl has taken his balloon up to the moon to save the moon people from the Brianna, the biggest evil witch ever with warts all over her nose. “This will not do,” Arrowhead says. He hops on his flying bison and they head to the moon. Just as they arrive to the moon they see Eric Carl in battle with the witch. Arrowhead jumps off the bison to join in the battle with his stick. But, the stick is not good enough to defeat the witch and she puts a spell on Arrowhead, which turns him into a bullfrog. Arrowhead starts jumping on Brianna trying to distract her from attacking Eric Carl so he can get back to his balloon. The spell wore off because the moon weakens spells and Arrowhead ended up squishing the witch. Arrowhead and Eric Carl don’t have time to inflate the balloon, or fly the bison, so they jump back to earth because it is much faster.

As they are falling to earth, Arrowhead explains how someone is trapped on the Dr. Weeks playground. They both agree they need help to save this person because they are not sure they have all the powers to save him. They land ever so gently in the Sahara Desert where they find two groups of animals arguing. Perfect! They needed friends to help them, so why not ask these animals? As they approach the group, they hear what they are arguing about, “Stripes are much better than spots, Donkey Kong!” “No, Zookie, spots are way better!” “You’re crazy, Donkey Kong! Stripes all the way!” “What are you talking about? Spots all the way, Apple!” Arrowhead and Eric Carl see they need to intervene so they step in to break up the argument and ask if they want to help save the person on the playground. But they can’t get their attention, to Eric Carl throws a love bomb between them, which separates the zebras and giraffes. Apple, Zookie, Donkey Kong, and Marsallow all stop to see what they have to say…

DAY 1>> The first group we worked with was the 3rd graders in yearbook class. They told us how they worked with articles, photos, drawings etc. and helped them create biographies/artwork to add to their final product. After a brief tour of MLAB, we created lists of things that we like/dislike so we could learn how to turn the things that inspire us into creative writing/imagery for the yearbook.

ESCAPE FROM THE BRONX (in fits and starts)

The plot is straight-forward enough to need no futher explanation: "The General Construction (GC) Corporation, led by President Clark, wish to tear down the Bronx to turn it into “the city of the future”. To do this they need to clear the current population from the area and have employed expelled prison warder Floyd Wangler and a private squad of Disinfestors to burn, shoot and gas those that will not leave willingly. While the bums, vagrants and elderly are easy prey, the warrior gangs of the Bronx will not go quietly."

The film is rich enough to offer almost endless discussion. Bhagat and Manning argue that it is one of the finest allegories of "gentrification" ever produced. Within the MLAB, they will SLOW IT DOWN--play 7 minutes at a time, and break for 7 minutes of considerate reflection. Together, we will connect the dots between plot & character and concept & principle.

Laundromat Project workshops

Join The Laundromat Project's Teaching Artists and Public Artists in Residence for art workshops that range from printmaking to seed bomb-making. "Green-up" your neighborhood with public artist in residence Tattfoo who will teach a variety of urban environmental stewardship workshops from his SOS Mobile Classroom. Learn how to make collograph prints with artist Rosemary Taylor and produce solar prints using found objects with artist Lady K-Fever.

The Neat Stuff
During the last few years I have worked with a small underground worldwide community. We are not so many but we are very good. Think of us like Jedi Order or Brotherhood of Sith, it will not matter. We consider ourselves as artists, directors, dreamers, adventurers, inventors, constructors... We don't see each other often. Via the web we build and share our knowledge. We are the hunters of the skies, our glowing signature is outdoor video goggles, our philosophy is “get the footage” and our trophy is The Ultimate Video.
We are FPV pilots.
In MLAB I am presenting unique piece of 15min flying footage. I use a small remote controlled 86 inch drone airplane designed and build by me. The plane cares livestream video system and onboard HD video camcorder.

Landscapes with the Fall of Icarus

Landscapes with the Fall of Icarus, Part One is a two-week long performance installation project byPaul Lloyd Sargent for the Mobile Literacy + Art Bus (MLAB) converted RV gallery parked on Manhattan's Lower East Side. This project will entail three distinct components:

1. On Sunday Sep 19th, 2 – 4pm, Paul Lloyd Sargent will moderate a panel of disposal chain experts, including Robin Nagle (anthropologist in residence for the Dept of Sanitation), Leila Darabi (journalist and founder of the encyclopedic everydaytrash.com), and more. We will talk about trash in cities around the world, the disposal chain in NYC, a brief history of garbage art, and much more.

2. Over the next two weeks of the exhibition Sargent will wander the neighborhood collecting trash for a collage project depicting the Lower East Side as seen by GoogleEarth. Come join him on his walks at 11am on Sunday morning before the panel (or daily by emailing Sargent at enolagrey [at] hotmail [dot] com).

3. As Sargent collects trash for his larger project, he will also be shooting still images for a new series entitled “Landscapes with the Fall of Icarus.” Images of these daily photo shoots will be visible for preview on a laptop hosted in the MLAB.

This series of three 15-minute workshops proposes to examine the relationship between an artwork and an audience. Three artists would create works in three different art forms--poetry, contemporary classical music, and performance art—that would examine the idea of what passes between an artwork and an audience. The artworks would be presented in an intense one-on-one session between the artist and an audience. The audience will then have an opportunity to record what passes between them and the work through written notes to the artist. These musings will then be taken and choreographed into a spoken word and music piece with the participating artists, which can be part of the M-Lab Archive.

Alexey was born in Siberia in 1976, and grew up in Hungary and Far East.
Most of his teenage years were spent in Moscow during fall of Soviet Union.
He has lived in underground communes and monasteries since 1995.
Hey then traveled to the Untied States to study Theology and received his BA in 1998. (MA in Divinity in 2003) Alexey worked as iconographer making frescos in few orthodox churches in NY and Mass. He joined experimental super 8 film group in Utica, NY in 2005. And has been screenings films with live-scores from experimental musicians since.

Combined personal footage, my friends' and unknown family films from 40s to 80s.
Media: Super 8, 8mm film. Bleach. Permanent markers hand-drawn onto film-strips then "re-projected."

Hey it's my last day working for Marion. I really dont want to stop working but i must say, working on the 601 tully project and MLAB has been a great experience for me. We had a special guest on the MLAB today! Mayor Stephanie Miner and her entourage visited MLAB today while we were recording Frazer's 601 Tully class' awesome song! HOW EXCITING!

Can't believe say yes summer camp is almost over! Has been so great and worked with so many awesome young say yessers! Special Shout out to Porter Elementary, who knocked out socks off over the past three days! Ready for Frazer tomorrow and next week, to be followed up by the Say Yes Summer Festival at Thornden Park Wednesday, JULY 28th, 9-2!

For the Summer Festival, MLAB will become a LOUNGE/GALLERY, featuring the alter-ego portraits (photos!) and original hip hop compilations (audio!) of SAY YES SUMMER CAMPERS!

MLAB RADIO: SAY YES SUMMER CAMP 2010!!

This week was the start of our Summer Program, MLAB RADIO!!! We are working at five Say Yes to Education Sites during the course of the four week Say Yes to Education Syracuse Summer Camp!

What is MLAB Radio!?
MLAB RADIO! is the MLAB Summer 2010 program developed for the Say Yes to Education Summer Camp by MLAB Coordinator/Artist, Jessica Posner, and Performance Artist/ Potato Rapper Michael Heagerty (AKA ToTs). Both Jessica and Michael will be on the MLAB every day making MLAB Radio a huge success!

What schools will MLAB Radio! visit?
This summer, we will be visiting Elmwood, Blodgett, Seymour, Porter, and Frazer.

How does MLAB Radio! work?
MLAB Radio will spend three days at each school, during which students will participate in intensive workshops in which they will write hip hop/poetry/songs, develop performance alter egos as individuals and as groups (which they will document through photography), and record original songs on the MLAB. Mike and and Jessica will then produce all of the tracks and images from the summer into a MLAB/SAY YES 2010 compilation cd and package-- all of which will be available online too!

What will happen, specifically, during the three day workshops?
On day one, we will give students an intro to the MLAB and a special (surprise!) performance by ToTs (Mike's Potato-loving performance alter ego). Students will then write about their favorite things to mine material for their songs. On day two, students will make both a group and individual M-LAB M-LIB (a mad-lib style writing exercise) to further develop their alter egos and provide more material for their songs.

On days two and three, students will work in groups both on and off the MLAB. On the MLAB, student work in small groups to learn the science behind audio, and to perform and record songs based on both their written and improvised material. Off the MLAB, students work in pairs and small groups using digital cameras to take thoughtful portraits of their performance alter-egos and groups.

What happens at the end of the session?
By the end of each session, we will have all the raw material we need to create original tracks featuring the words, voices, and beats of our students. Additionally, Mike and Jessica will curate student artwork into an MLAB RADIO! multimedia package. Jessica and Mike will produce all raw material into one polished package, which will be available online and in limited hard copy quantities at the end of the summer.

The Mobile Literacy Arts Bus (MLAB) is an artist-run, renovated 1984 American Eagle Recreational Vehicle that exists as a flexible space open to community members' proposals for alternative educational and cultural programming. Artist Marion Wilson conceived founded and directed the renovation of MLAB and the current day to day management of MLAB has been turned over to students, community members and the Syracuse city school district. The pilot year MLAB served one high school, and now in its second year, is serving seventeen schools working with Say Yes to Education, offering art, photography, and writing programming in their after-school programs, as well as with NY Gear Up, offering a conversation and creativity space for young women in high school through an MLAB developed program called Girl Talk. Members of MLAB and 601 Tully Enterprises develop and facilitate these programs.

MLAB hosts ART 21 screening this thursday!

SYRACUSE, NY – [October 12] – MLAB (The Mobile Literacy Arts Bus) + 601 Tully, in partnership with Art21, Inc. as part of its Art21 Access ’09 initiative, presents a sneak preview of the fifth season of Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century, the only prime time national television series focused exclusively on contemporary art, from 5-8 om, October 14th, at COLAB on the Fourth Floor of the Warehouse . The event features screenings of the Compassion episode, featuring Carrie Mae Weems, an internationally renowned artist living in Syracuse. The event will also feature the Fundred project by artist Mel Chin, profiled in season 1 of Art 21.

MLAB + 601 Tully are community based, collaborative design/build projects by an interdisciplinary design group of artists and architects who create sculptural spaces to address social need. MLAB + 601 Tully projects are directed by Marion Wilson, Artist and Director of Community Initiatives in the Visual Arts at Syracuse University, and are made possible through the generous support of the School of Education at Syracuse University.

Jessica Posner, MLAB coordinator and member of MLAB + 601 Tully describes the event, “This evening has the makings of an incredible night for art, community, and public exchange—organized not only to the work of a world-renowned artist who resides in our city, but will be contextualized within the city wide art night, Third Thursday, as hosted by some of Syracuse's most groundbreaking collaborative and community based arts initiatives: MLAB + 601 Tully.” A viewing of in-progress work by the 601 Tully team, currently working to design and build the 601 Tully property on the Near West Side, will also be open to the public. This event is free and open to the public.

Art21 Access ’09 is an international screening initiative created to increase knowledge of contemporary art, ignite dialogue, and inspire creative thinking through hundreds of public screenings and events that tailor the ideas presented in the series to the interests and concerns of local audiences. The season premiered on PBS October 7th with a new episode each Wednesday during the month at 10pm (check local listings). Through in-depth profiles and interviews, the four-part series reveals the inspiration, vision and techniques behind the creative works of some of today’s most thought-provoking artists.

This event is part of Art21 Access ‘09, a celebration of contemporary art and Season 5 of Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century sponsored by Art21. Art21 Access 09 is held at over 300 museums, schools, libraries, art spaces, and community centers and is organized in collaboration with Americans for the Arts’ National Arts and Humanities Month. MLAB Radio Live!

MLAB Radio is Live! Please visit the MLAB Radio website to listen to moving, honest, real, and truly inspirational audio pieces by some of Syracuse's finest young adults.

MLAB spent four days at Nottingham High School in early June 2009 outfitted as a recording studio, where students worked in pairs to record their audio pieces inside the Mobile Literacy Arts Bus (MLAB). Participating students in Ms. Zizzi's and Ms. Benedetto's ninth grade English classes based their audio essays on the NPR's "This I Believe" contest.

Later this summer, MLAB Radio will go live on Redhouse Art Radio, so be sure to check back often for more MLAB Updates!

MLAB: Nottingham High School, Syracuse New York

Hello All! And welcome back to the MLAB blog.

We have been very busy working on developing a future MLAB project, of which more information will be coming soon!

We are off to a great start at Nottingham High School this Spring Semester! We are working with two eleventh grade English classes, the students of Ms. Zizzi and Ms. Benedetto. The Nottingham High School students are working with the SU Literacy, Community, Photography class made up of creative writing and transmedia graduate and undergraduate students-- taught by photographer Stephen Mahan and Poet Michael Burkard.

The students are doing incredible work, and appear to be making themselves quite at home with the MLAB-- spreading out on our customized, break-away benches and using the custom made lap desks/cushions both as seats and writing surfaces. It is exciting to again see the space come alive with the energy and creativity of students transforming the walls and space in their creative process.

The first writing assignment was to write a self portrait in the absence of the self. Students explored points of view, personifying objects such as pencils and cameras. In photography, students also worked on self portraits. The work is off to a great start, and I truly look forward to seeing the work of these students develop over the semester!

MLAB BOSTON: MassART

Last Week, several members of the MLAB Team (Jessica, Vince, Zach, and Samantha) accompanied Marion to MassArt in Boston for a lecture and workshop with SIM (Studio for Interrelated Media) students. We were invited by Kianga Ford, whom we met as the Artist in Residence at the Warehouse Gallery in Syracuse, New York. In addition to the Thursday lecture and the Friday workshop, we also put up a show of Marion's work and images and ephemera from MLAB in the Godine Family Gallery. On behalf of the whole team, I'd like to express our sincerest gratitude to Kianga, Allie and Evan (student curators), and the rest of the SIM area for making our trip welcoming, engaging, and an overall incredible experience. Thank you. We look forward to working with SIM and MassART again in the (hopefully near) future.

Following are some images from the show, lecture, and Friday morning workshop class. During the class, SIM students worked collaboratively to spacialize social issues/problems within the Boston community using architectural chalk lines. Students addressed such issues as dark pathways in parks, stray cats, noise pollution, and access to information and technology.

Hope all is well! Marion, YunPei, Samantha, and I (Jessica) are back from New Orleans... and ready to finish out the semester! Sadly, there are only a few more Fowler visits before the semester is over, but MLAB will soon be working on the BLAM! zine (little magazine of student work) for the final Fowler LCP (Mr. Luwin's First Period Class w. Stephen Mahan, John C., and their class) Gallery Show at the Warehouse coming up (very quickly!) in December. More Details to come soon.

I would like to encourage all of our readers/members/fans/friends/followers to please subscribe to our new EMAIL LIST SERVE! I've just set it up, and am currently ironing out a few wrinkles, but will be sending an update every few weeks with MLAB's activities and whereabouts. There is a sign up box on the right hand side of this blog (below the NEW MLAB interior photo): just add your email, click the button, check your email, and then simpy reply to the message sent to you by the MLAB list serve. We've had a very exciting week at MLAB! Thanks to all of the students and parents that came out Thursday evening at Fowler High School's open house night. It was great to have you and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

We've just wrapped up our participation at the 40Below "Exposed" Summit today. We partnered with the Community Folk Arts Center, parked next door, and met some amazing people and made some good connections. A special thanks to Cjala and everyone at CFAC, we look forward to working with you more in the furture! And a warm thanks to everyone who came in to check out MLAB today! We saw nearly 50 people today, many of them very creative and active individuals in the Syracuse Arts Community. I spoke with several people today that had many, many exciting ideas for making artwork with and about our communities, and we look forward to collaborating with you in the near future!

Wigged Monument!

Hello Everyone!

As some of you may know, in addition to being MLAB Coordinator, I am also an artist. A public art piece of mine, "Wigged Monument," located in Forman Park in downtown Syracuse, has recently made a bit of a splash in the local Syracuse media. The Syracuse PBA is unhappy with the placement of the sculpture, and Syracuse University is currently working the Police to resolve the issue peacably.

Going Home

Thanks to everyone who came out to make MLABcafe at the Redhouse a huge success! We had many guests who had an opportunity to see MLAB as a community space and it was wonderful. Not to mention, the lovely work of Michelle DaRin and Melanie Littlejohn. The new pull-apart-puzzle benches (designed by Zach, realized by Steve Ginsberg) look fantastic and really add to the space, providing four additional modular seats/surfaces. In addtition Thanks, again, to all the MLABers that came out, the Redhouse, and OF COURSE our friends and supporters—with whom none of this would have been possible.

The work coming out of Fowler High School is fantastic.

Today, and for the first time, the LCP (Literacy, Community, Photography) students at Fowler high school were sent home with digital cameras to document their away-from-school lives. I am incredibly excited to see the work generated by this bright group of young artists, and to have a chance to encounter their lives as they see it. I know this is cliché, but with the great freedom and trust Professor Mahan and Colosacco are providing for these young artists to write and photograph how and what they want, there is also a HUGE responsibility. As a filmmaker, I know that responsibility: the responsibility of crafting your reality in a way to let other people in—but only as far as you want. It’s a huge responsibility, and an important lesson to learn, especially in this age of myspace, facebook, internet dating, and second lives. We are all complicated beings, with many sides and (sometimes) faces or names. How is it we want the world to see us? And how is it we see ourselves? Can the two exist together? Should they? Ultimately, how do you show someone else how you see things? This is your opportunity. And I speak for myself, as well the SU students and faculty when I say that we can’t wait to see what you have to show us.

"Fowler Finally Gets a Break."

What an exhausting (and successful/exhilerating/supremelyclimactic) few days it has been.

MLAB set sail on its maiden voyage today, spending its first full day at Fowler High School in the Syracuse City School District. It was also my first day driving the beast by myself (with thanks to Tom Salmonsen!), and to great relief and with the release of an incredible load of anxiety, I am happy to say it went very well and I am looking forward to our next quickly approaching adventure.

Today we saw three classes: Mr. Adam Lutwin's 11th grade English class, and Mr. Eric Williams; Art Class and Photography Class. We had nearly 70 students come through the bus today, many of them skeptical at first (it is, after all, a trailer, right?), and many of which seemed to slowly warm up to this space that was designed and built for them by students not much older than themselves. Definitely an interesting cast of characters to watch; I'm pretty excited to see our MLAB narrative unfold, and see the work of these young artists develop over the course of the semester.

I'm also forward to working with Lutwin and Williams. They are incredibly supportive and excited, identify with the uniqueness of this venture, as well as with their students, and provide the absolutely necessary link to making a program like this work. Like I told some of the students today, "Our job at SU is now largely done. We've designed and built the bus for you, its your job now to get creative and make work."

I also want to send out a huge thank you to everyone at Fowler, especially Sue Centore who has been central; as well as everyone at the Partnership for Better Education (David Morgan, Susan Feightner, Sheila DeRose, and Len Fonte); and of course Stephen Mahan, John (Mr. C), the SU students, and of course Marion.

On a personal level, I'm energized about coming back to Fowler and seeing what these young adults are made of-- how they reflect and portray themselves through images and words. Furthermore, this is an opportunity for their creative endeavors (and themselves) to be taken seriously, an opportunity that arises far too infrequently fore most of us. I also really enjoy teenagers, mostly because of their uncanny ability to immediately pinpoint boundaries, rip them apart, and expose the seams which we so often attempt to conceal and control. As unnerving and uncomfortable as this can sometimes be, its a constant reminder of how fragile and tenuous we and our relationships are. It's also hard being a teenager, located right between the frustrating boundaries of rules and responsibilities-- with escape either nowhere in site, or somewhere on the radar, yet just out of reach. Being in the one of the poorest neighborhoods in the country, which Fowler is, doesn't make it any easier, either.

As an artist, I'm also supremely interested in seeing how the people we designed MLAB for will end up actually using it. And I'm not sure really if we, the MLAB team, composed largely of middle and upper middle class backgrounds, ever fully realized the gravity of this project-- because I didn't until today. We have taken an RV, a classic symbol of middle class up-and-out-ward mobility, removed everything except the shell (which we also transformed) and filled it with considerably very little: thoughtful walls, floor, and ceiling; some cameras, books, computers, printers, and a whole lot of ambition. And we've driven it over, and more or less handed it over with a new charge to a school that rarely gets a break: make.

I look forward to this pilot semester at Fowler, and will be giving a blog update after each of our visits (once or twice a week through thanksgiving).

- Marco is working hard in studio, and was part of the team that built a large hand sculpture now installed downtown accross from L'Adour.
- Roslyn, after her successful run as co-founder of Contemporary Gallery in Syracuse, headed off to New York City to earn a Masters degree in Arts Administration at NYU. Read about her gallery here.

Welcome Back, everyone!

It has been quite a while since our last update, but MLAB and its team members have been very, very busy. Since we've last left off: several of us graduated, the rest are wrapping up; two have gotten married; one has left for a cross-country bike journey; many have moved on to different pastures, and some of us are still here bringing MLAB into the next stage of development.

Marion and Jessica are busy working on getting MLAB up and running as an organizational entity, now as the official Director (Marion) and Co-ordinator (Jessica) of MLAB. We even just moved into an office down at the Warehouse! With just a few finishing touches still left to complete, we are definately ramping up to pilot MLAB at Fowler High School in the very near future! In addition, MLAB has a few other appearances coming up which we will be updating to the blog as details become finalised.

Mayfest!

Thanks to everyone today that made M-Lab at Mayfest a great success! We had a constant flow of old and new friends to M-lab, as well as community poem started by Poet Michael Burkard and a community drawing started by Sarah McCoubry.

It was a great time, and really nice to see everyone on such a nice day! It was also great to spend time in the bus, such a beautiful, warm, cool, and nice space to hang out, talk, and be creative.

Artist and Curator Daniel Seiple will be giving a lecture on Tuesday,
April 15, at 7pm in 121 shaffer. Please come!

Dan Seiple is a Berlin-based sculptor and curator with an interest in
performance and site-specific works. He has exhibited internationally
at The Markus Winter Gallery, Berlin, M29, Cologne, Momenta Art,
Cynthia Broan Gallery, White Columns and Apex Art, New York, NY,
Outpost, Norwich, England, and will be included in the 2008 Berlin
Biennial. Seiple also runs a gallery space, Homie, http://
homie.travelhome.org and a sculpture park and residency program,
Skulpturenpark http://www.skulpturenpark.org.

The Single Room Hotel

Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum is pleased to announce the grand
opening of The Single Room Hotel, an affordable 2-star hotel made by
artist, Etienne Boulanger. Contained within four walls of billboards,
the hotel offers a modestly lavish and cozy interior including
electricity, heat, and hot water. The hotel is centrally and uniquely
located on the grounds of Skulpturenpark in Berlin-Mitte. For the
sophisticated traveler and everyday adventurer, it is within walking
distance of nearly all of Berlin’s most significant tourist
attractions. The hotel will be open from November until March.
Reservations can be made through the website provided below.

The Single Room Hotel sits on the corner of one of the few remaining
blocks of vacant land in Mitte. Property fences and billboards are
the only standing evidence of the land’s ownership and economy. Upon
visiting Skulpturenpark, the hotel blends in with this landscape.
From the outside, the hotel is a 1-story construction of billboards.
Boulanger has leased the hotel’s façade to advertising companies.
Consequently, the billboards provide not only the hotel’s
architectural possibility, but also its economic sustainability. With
the added revenue, the hotel can offer affordable and competitive
rates. Yet while the billboards serve their typical purpose to draw
attention to themselves, they conversely offer an urban camouflage
for the hotel and its guests to go unnoticed.

The Single Room Hotel evolved out of Boulanger’s previous work, plug-
in, a series of investigations into Berlin’s urban and public
architecture. From 2001-2003, he explored and inhabited unused,
discreet, and obscure spaces throughout the city. In one instance, he
domesticated a surprisingly big crawl space behind an advertising
sign in the U-Bahn station. He later moved into an enclave in a
bridge’s concrete foundation. The spaces often required subtle
modifications, such as building a cardboard wall, in order to
camouflage his infiltration. With The Single Room Hotel, Boulanger
has now added a commercial twist. Collectively, the projects avoid a
cliché utopian and alternative model to urbanization. Rather, they
present practical and everyday strategies for maximizing public
space, and provide a way to live within and without the system.

The Single Room Hotel will be open from November 2007 until March 2008.

A many thanks to all of our volunteers who have made a huge impact on helping towards the big preview this week! We can't thank you enough, thanks again to all for your help and support!!!

We had an incredibly busy day today. At one point, I think we had a dozen people doing various tasks. These are just some of them:
(I know I'm going to leave things out, so please add on...)
Ramp unrolled and set up
Major upoholstering (only two left... Thanks Anita and Ms. Harmon!)
Cushions affixed to wood backing/faces
Agreggate door installed
Super ceiling installed
Dozens of ceiling tiles sorted and cleaned!

The MLAB Team/ "Social Sculpture" has received a Chancellor's Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship for "outstanding work in improving the quality of life in the greater Syracuse community." "This award is give each year to a class that exemplifies the highest ideal of sustained, quality engagement with citizens in our community."

The Awards will be given at the Chancellor's Award dinner on Monday, March 31st in the Goldstein Auditorium at 5:30pm. Please let me know if you can make it and I can reserve a table.

Unveiling of the Pilot April 3rd 8:30 am at Nottingham HS

Vince and I went to Nottingham High School today for a meeting to plan the April 3rd donor event. I am trying to get them to word it in the press release as an unveiling of the pilot - to keep expectations in check - and so there is the understanding that parts are a work in progress. All seemed willing and excited.

The RV will drive up to the front of Nottingham at 7:30 am on April 3rd and we will set it up. The guests will arrive at 8:30. The Thursday before (the 27th) we will do a mock drive over at 9am to see that it all fits and works. I scheduled this during class time and not everyone needs to go on the 27th - maybe one or two people - as there will be plenty to do back at the shop.

I hope that everyone can come on the April 3rd - even if you have not been around much this semester! Two or three students will likely do the public speaking again - but they want all of you to do the touring of the bus and showing the donors, the Chancellor and the school district kids around the bus. Please confirm that you will be there that morning.

Also any help anyone can give us from March 20-April 3rd would be appreciated. We will be charrette-ing around the clock (ceiling installation, upholstering, cabinet fabrication and staining, cleaning the cab, setting up and testing the ramp, finishing electrical) for those last two weeks. Check with the blog for jobs. Thanks and hope you are all well! I know you are busy.

At the moment the ceiling tiles are almost worked out. Just need a couple dimensions from the bus before we can start cutting. Below is a series of attempts to get the most surface area out of the panels. The last is the most recent.So close...

The sub-ceiling (or super-ceiling) is 90% complete. The picture below shows only the panels in the center of bus. The sides are down at the moment for wiring.

Having the entire ceiling faced with ply will make arraying and dilling up the acrylic a quick and clean install. The Yun-Pei and Marion custom sanded panels are gorgeous. We were able to get a huge discount on scrap acrylics from Laird Plastics up by Carrier Circle. Only a day or two of work drawing, laser cutting and cleaning left to do before they go up.

Hey guys! With assistance from one of our volunteers yesterday I was able to wire together all of the light sockets! This is huge progress in terms of lighting because what I had figured to be a 5 hour job only required 3 hours with an extra set of hands! The only things left to do in the back of the bus are
1-use zip ties to secure wires that hang below the depth of the ceiling to the structure of the ceiling (anyone can do this and I know I had purchased some of these somewhere along the way for use in the bus)...
2- run a ground wire from the 2 end light bulbs on the loop back to the
front of the bus (the copper wires that are not attached to the light socket are the
ground wires, we just need to use wire nuts to connect those to two lengths of wire and then run it to the front of the bus)
3- maybe move the wire that runs to the heater in the back through the holes
in the ceiling structure so that gets out of the way of the panels being placed up
there...
4- and finish wiring to the box in the front of the RV (I'm not sure of the
status David left this in, so maybe someone could contact him about that in addition to
the email I sent today)... That should be it for now. It's all coming together bit by bit for our April 3rd unveiling!
